Andy Reid says the Kansas City Chiefs wanted to retain Tyreek Hill, but the salary cap eventually got in the way.

Kansas City traded Hill to the Miami Dolphins last week. The wide receiver then signed a massive contract extension with the Dolphins.

"I love Tyreek Hill," Reid said. "There's no rift between Tyreek Hill and myself. I thought he deserved an opportunity if that's where he wanted to go. He's a family man that has a few kids and he's got to be able to support them now and down the road, and this gives him an opportunity to do that. At the same time, it gives us great compensation.

"We came in aggressive [with a contract offer], and after we got to a point, we just said, 'Listen, in this day and age you have issues you have to deal with with the cap.' So we felt like it was better to allow him to go ahead and be traded. ... You can go different routes with a player. You can play hardball or you can go about it the way I did, or we did."

While the San Francisco 49ers have yet to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, the team doesn't envision a scenario where he is cut.

"I don't foresee that," John Lynch said. "He's too good a player. I think Jimmy will be playing for us or will be playing for someone else. He's too good of a player not to be."

According to Lynch, the biggest reason Garoppolo has yet to be traded is simple: The Niners have not received a formal offer. 

While other quarterbacks began to move in trades and signings around the league, Lynch said Garoppolo's right shoulder surgery is what caused interested teams to put pursuit of him on hold.

"I think, ultimately, the teams that we were closest with, the surgery gave them pause and they ended up going in other directions," Lynch said.

There have been rumors that the New York Giants could trade Saquon Barkley, but John Mara is putting those to bed.

"We're not shopping Saquon, but Joe [Schoen's] the general manager," Mara said. "If he and the head coach want to make a personnel decision and have a conviction about it, I'm not gonna interfere with it. But that's not something we're actively looking to do, let's put it that way."

During the NFL Scouting Combine, reports suggested the Giants had discussed potentially moving on from Barkley. 

The Kansas City Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, but the New York Jets were involved in talks for the Pro Bowl wide receiver up until the end.

According to a report, the Jets offered K.C. two 2022 second-round picks (35th and 38th overall) and a 2022 third-rounder (69th) for Hill.

While the Jets didn't offer a first-round pick like Miami, the total package was comparable. Accepting New York's offer would have given Kansas City three picks in the first 38 selections.

Once they received acceptable offers from the Dolphins and Jets, the Chiefs let Hill make the final decision.

The Cleveland Browns are not seeking a first round pick in trade talks for Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield, who was the No. 1 pick in 2018, will be traded by the Browns after they acquired Deshaun Watson.

The Seattle Seahawks have inquired about the availability of Mayfield, while the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons are out.

The Browns currently have no plans to pay some of Mayfield's salary.

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to acquire Tyreek Hill from the Kansas City Chiefs for 2022 draft picks in the first, second and fourth rounder, along with a fourth and sixth in 2023.

Hill will also sign a four-year, $120 million extension with the Dolphins that includes $72.2 million in guaranteed money.

Tyreek Hill has been granted permission to seek a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs as extension talks stalled.

The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets have emerged as the two most likely trade partners with the Chiefs for Hill.

Hill, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl in all six seasons of his NFL career, had a career-best 111 receptions for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

If the Chiefs trade Hill, the Chiefs' wide receivers would include free-agent addition JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, Josh Gordon, Justin Watson, Cornell Powell, Gehrig Dieter and Corey Coleman.

The Indianapolis Colts have acquired Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons for a 2022 third round pick.

The Colts were desperate for a quarterback after they traded Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders for third-round picks in 2022 and 2023. 

Ryan will be the fifth starting quarterback in Frank Reich's tenure. The Colts have been looking for a long-term answer since Andrew Luck retired in August 2019. 

The trade will leave a dead-money charge of $40.525 million on the Falcons' salary cap this season.

The Falcons tried to trade for Deshaun Watson last week, which put the future of Ryan in question.

The San Francisco 49ers are telling teams they have an offer on the table for Jimmy Garoppolo of two second round picks.

The 49ers acquired Garoppolo from the New England Patriots in 2017 for one second round pick.

The potential destinations for Garoppolo include the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans and potentially the Carolina Panthers.
